Company History
Independence Audio-Video was founded in 1971 by Gary Huffman, who remains an active member of our company to this day. Electronics have been a passion for Gary dating back to his early days with the U.S. Air Force and the Korean War. By the late 1960’s, Gary found himself advising friends and neighbors
on their audio purchases and eventually began buying things for them. In 1971 Gary quit his job and set up a Hi-Fi shop in the basement of his house. He used classified ads in the Kansas City Star and called the shop "Independence Audio". To this day we still have many regular customers who "bought out
of the basement" and they seem pretty proud to tell us about it. Gary did well enough in the basement to eventually build our current building which opened in 1978. During the 1970’s, 80’s he designed & built HSL Loudspeakers which became our "house brand" during this era. HSL speakers
enjoyed somewhat of a cult following in this area and we have many current customers who still sing the praises of their HSL’s. Over the years we expanded from our home audio roots and moved into other emerging categories such as home video and car audio. We helped launch every major new technology to
appear, from Eight Track Tape Players to the latest Blu-Ray Disc machines.
Today, Independence Audio-Video has evolved into a full service audio-video store, specializing in the design and installation of home theater and mobile audio-video systems. We have the most experienced and best trained
service staff in the Kansas City area. With our comfortable and laid-back atmosphere we think you will find our company very easy to do business with.
